What is Palo Santo?

Holy Wood — 3,000 years of sacred tradition

Palo Santo (literally "Holy Wood" in Spanish) is one of the most revered aromatic trees on Earth. For millennia, Andean and Amazonian peoples have burned its resin-rich wood to cleanse spaces, open the mind and connect with the sacred. Today, science confirms what tradition always knew — Palo Santo contains powerful active compounds with measurable wellbeing benefits.

Palo Santo belongs to the same botanical family as frankincense, myrrh and copal — the great sacred resins of human history. Its scientific name is Bursera graveolens, a wild tree native to the dry tropical forests of Peru and Ecuador.

"It is not the tree that is sacred. It is what happens in the space between the smoke and the breath."

Authentic Palo Santo must come from naturally fallen or naturally deceased trees that have rested on the ground for a minimum of 3–4 years. During this time, the wood's resin matures and concentrates — producing the complex, warm aroma of citrus, pine and soft woodsmoke that distinguishes genuine Holy Wood from imitations.

At Khamuy, every product in our Palo Santo range is sourced directly from certified sustainable producers in South America who follow this process precisely. We work without intermediaries — directly with the farming communities who care for this land.

How to use it

A simple guide to burning Palo Santo

You do not need ceremony experience to benefit from Palo Santo. All you need is intention, an open window and a moment of stillness.

01
Set your intention

Before lighting, take three slow breaths. Hold the stick and bring to mind what you want to clear or invite — calm, focus, cleansing of a space, opening a meditation. Intention transforms burning wood into ceremony.

02
Light & hold

Hold the tip of the stick at a 45° angle in a flame for 30–45 seconds until it catches. Blow gently — the flame will extinguish and the wood will begin producing a thick, white, aromatic smoke. Never leave burning wood unattended.

03
Move & breathe

Walk slowly through your space, letting the smoke reach the corners of each room. Or simply rest it in a fireproof dish beside you. Breathe naturally. A stick self-extinguishes after 1–3 minutes and can be relit many times.

Tips for essential oil & roll-on: For the roll-on, apply to wrists, temples or the back of the neck and inhale deeply. For pure essential oil, add 3–5 drops to a diffuser with water, or dilute 2–3% in a carrier oil (jojoba, almond) before skin contact. Never apply undiluted essential oil directly to skin.

Our commitment

Sustainability is not a label — it is how we work

The global demand for Palo Santo has put pressure on wild populations of Bursera graveolens. That is why certification and traceable sourcing are not optional for us — they are the foundation of every product we sell.

Khamuy works directly with producing communities in South America who have been cultivating and protecting Palo Santo forests for generations. Our supply chain has no middlemen — which means full visibility into how the wood is harvested, processed and shipped.

Only naturally fallen trees harvested 3–4 year minimum wood maturation Official government certifications Active reforestation support Fair trade with local communities Zero synthetic additives Full chain-of-custody documentation

When you buy from Khamuy, you are supporting a model of commerce that gives back to the land and the people who tend it. We are proud to carry official sustainability certifications that verify every claim above.

🌳

From the forest, for the forest

Palo Santo only develops its full aromatic and medicinal potential after the tree has naturally completed its life cycle. We never cut living trees. The 3–4 year rest period after a tree falls allows the resin to mature and concentrate — producing the rich, complex aroma that distinguishes genuine Palo Santo from imitation products sold on the mass market.

Frequently asked questions

What people ask about Palo Santo

What is Palo Santo and where does it come from?
Palo Santo (Bursera graveolens, "Holy Wood") is a wild tree native to the dry tropical forests of Perú. It belongs to the same botanical family as frankincense and myrrh. For thousands of years it has been used by Andean and Amazonian peoples in healing ceremonies, purification rituals and meditation. All Khamuy Palo Santo is sourced directly from certified producing communities in South America.
Is Palo Santo endangered? Is it ethical to buy it?
Bursera graveolens is not currently classified as endangered, but irresponsible over-harvesting is a real concern with the rise in global demand. This is why certification matters enormously. Khamuy sources exclusively from producers who harvest only naturally fallen trees (never living ones), maintain active reforestation programs and hold official government certifications. Buying certified Palo Santo from responsible distributors like Khamuy actually supports the communities and ecosystems that protect these forests.
What is the difference between Palo Santo sticks, powder and essential oil?
Each form serves a different purpose. Sticks are burned directly for aromatic smoke — ideal for space cleansing and ceremony. Powder is used in incense blends, charcoal ceremonies and natural cosmetics. Incense provides a steady, hands-free alternative to burning sticks. Essential oil is the concentrated aromatic and therapeutic extract — used in diffusers, diluted for massage, or in the ready-to-apply roll-on format. Natural logs are for large ceremonies or decorative use. Beads are the wearable form — a mala or bracelet that carries the scent with you.
How do I know if Palo Santo is genuine quality?
Genuine, high-quality Palo Santo has a complex, multi-layered aroma — warm citrus, soft pine, a hint of mint and sweet resin. It should be dense and heavy for its size (a sign of high resin content) and produce a white, fragrant smoke when burned. Low-quality or artificially scented Palo Santo often smells flat, sharp or chemical. Khamuy's products come exclusively from wood that has rested a minimum of 3–4 years after natural death, ensuring the resin has fully matured.
Can I use Palo Santo oil directly on my skin?
Our Palo Santo Roll-On Oil is pre-diluted to a safe dermal concentration and can be applied directly to pulse points (wrists, temples, neck). Pure Palo Santo Essential Oil, however, must always be diluted in a carrier oil (such as jojoba, sweet almond or coconut oil) at a concentration of 2–3% before skin contact. Never apply undiluted pure essential oil directly to skin. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have a medical condition, consult a healthcare professional before use.
Do you offer wholesale Palo Santo for shops and retailers?
Yes. Khamuy supplies certified Palo Santo to wellness shops, yoga studios, holistic practitioners and retail distributors across Europe and internationally. As a direct-certified distributor working without intermediaries, we offer transparent pricing and full product documentation. Enquire via our contact page for wholesale pricing, minimum order quantities and available formats.
How many times can I use one Palo Santo stick?
A single Palo Santo stick typically self-extinguishes after 1–3 minutes of burning. It can be relit many times and can provide long regular personal use. Once a stick is too short to hold safely, you can place it in a fireproof dish and let it burn down completely, or place it in a drawer or wardrobe as a natural aromatic.
